A few months ago, I discovered Gourmet Magazine. Yes, I know, that is like “discovering” the Beatles. I’ve been getting more and more into cooking over the years and the magazine just sounded intimidating. One day I just decided I was worth it and I bought an issue. Of course, that happened to be the last issue ever. I have been foraging since at used bookstores and on eBay for back issues.
One of the things I like best about the magazine, is the travel aspect. There was one story about a couple who took a vacation in the Caribbean, renting a boat with a captain and a cook. It was so well written, it made me want to take the same trip, despite my fear and awe of the sea.
An article that struck closer to home was one on kolaches. The featured a bakery that is on the way to Austin, so we took a slight detour on the way there to try it out. I had never been to this one, but Cara remembered going to the Bon Ton Restaurant when she was younger.
The kolaches were as good as described and didn’t last very long once we got them home.
